A word from our Founder & Director - Klara Debeljak

Why I became A Certified Nutrition Coach

Hi, I’m Klara.

So, I have to admit - nutrition is not my first career and long before I set up on a mission to help others improve their health and well-being through food, my professional life was rooted in the corporate world.

For many years, I was working in international communications research and while I loved my career at that time, for me, corporate also meant super busy, highly stressed and focused on my work 24/7. And, it also meant I was giving myself almost no time to look after my own well-being.

And so, after about a decade of living that lifestyle,

my body said no more and rebelled against all this neglect.

My health caught up with me. I felt chronically tired and cranky, unmotivated and simply not at my best. And then,

I was also diagnosed with an autoimmune condition.

I had no idea what that meant at first, but was quickly told by the doctors that this is something that cannot be cured, only (potentially) controlled for the rest of my life.

As if that was not enough, I was also told that that there are only two ways to manage the disease - through surgery and life-long hormone treatment.

I was stunned.

Not only because I had always thought that I lead a relatively healthy lifestyle and that something like this could not possibly happen to me, but also because the treatment options I was given sounded so harsh.

Surgery and hormones. Surgery and hormones.

Surely there had to be another, gentler way of dealing with this?

I went home and my research brain could not rest. So I started reading about the condition and pouring over all the studies, reports, books and articles on it that I could find.

After weeks of researching and coming across a number of people who have managed to put the same condition into remission naturally, it became clear to me that there actually might be another way to tackle this.

That way, was changing my nutrition.

It sounded so simple, but I had no idea if it will actually work.

Still, I had nothing to lose, so I decided to put the treatments that were offered to me on a temporary back-burner and try to first heal my body my way - through changing what I ate and drank every day.

Based on what I read and the advice of people that did it themselves, I wrote myself a new eating plan with do’s and don’ts and stuck it on the fridge.

The change I committed myself to was substantial and at first, following this wasn’t easy.

What do I eat now when there is so much I cannot have? Where do I find alternatives for the foods that I have been eating so far? How do I create a balanced meal and make sure I’m getting all the nutrients I need?

It took a few weeks for things to fall into place and for my new eating habits to become a part of my routine. I started to feel more energetic and stronger physically and mentally. Over the next few months medical scans showed that my body was healing and after a year,

I was symptom free.

I felt empowered and liberated. I knew that eating well was important, but before having to deal with my own health challenges I had no idea about the full power of nutrition and how much of our health we can control simply through what we eat.

So that's how my journey into the nutrition world began.

After my son was born, my interest in nutrition deepened further and I also realised how difficult it can be to find reliable, effective and practical advice on children and family nutrition.

This is when my desire to create a nutrition consultancy to support women, families and busy professionals emerged and after receiving my accreditation as a Certified Nutrition Coach from the Institute of Health Sciences, Nourishi was born.

Today, I am driven primarily by seeing our clients achieve their health and wellbeing goals and transforming their quality of life, often by making relatively small changes to their eating habits.

I hope that at Nourishi we have an opportunity to work with you too, either through individual consultations, our nutrition masterclasses or corporate programs, and help you discover how you too can

Live your best life through the power of food.
